By John L Orchan

In this article we are going to briefly discuss black mold and how it affects you. More importantly, for a solution to black mold problems, please read to the end.

Appearing as a greenish black color around your house, it's more famously known as 'black mold'.

Can it affect your health? Good question. Well, everyone is different and there are varying levels of tolerances to consider here. So not everyone will be affected the same way. However what is more important is that people with weak immune systems, infants and young children as well as the elderly are at an increased risk of experiencing adverse health effects related to mold exposure.

There are many ways that we are exposed to mold. For instance through the skin, it can be inhaled and even ingested. Allergic reactions can be triggered by mold with symptoms such as

  • Runny nose
  • Itchy-watery eyes
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Throat irritation
  • Asthma

Back in 1999 the USA Today cover story reported that a 300% increase in the asthma rate over the past 20 years has been linked to molds.

That's quite a staggering fact.

Once mold infests and gets a grip on your home, it can be very expensive to clean up. To make matters worse, many home insurance companies are denying any type of mold claims.

Even the value of your home could be at risk through mold infestation. If it has not been cleaned properly through expensive methods and efforts, it may not even be inhabitable.

Do we have any control over black mold?

The answer is yes, thankfully, however understanding the problem is critical before finding the solution to black mold.

Big question...do you have a humidity problem?

Damp conditions make a perfect breeding ground for the small pores to multiply.

So it is vitally important to recognize that the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture. So it is advisable to invest in a reliable, quality dehumidifier as a starter.

Equally as important...if you do have a problem with humidity, you also need to know where the problem lies i.e.which areas or rooms. Humidity sensors are relatively inexpensive and well worth the money as they can be placed around the home and they will monitor the humidity levels. As a guide anything over 55% or more (humidity), then you are at risk.

Remember black mold can grow on anything porous. For instance, wood, cement, paper, clothing of all types, behind wallpaper, ceiling tiles and other common household building materials.

So, not trying to scare you here, but this is a massive problem that can affect just about every home if we are not careful. There is a simple solution to black mold. The more you understand it, the better chance you have of eradicating it. If anyone in your household has asthma or suffers from any type of allergies, then getting rid of black mold is a big MUST!
